Rationale
Today, British Columbia's coastal forest sector is globally uncompetitive due to multiple factors and influences. FPInnovations, in partnership with the coastal forest industry and the British Columbia and Federal governments, intend to positively impact industry competitiveness through on-the-ground application of science and technology across the sector's value chain.
Key Objectives
To enhance the competitiveness of the BC coastal industry by increasing the value of the coastal hemlock and amabilis fir (hem-fir) resource.
Key Deliverables
- Identify products that are appropriately suited to the coastal hem-fir resource and as a result, provide a competitive advantage over other wood species and alternative products.
- Demonstrate the improved value proposition from matching current and new products to the fibre resource; demonstrate opportunities and technologies to improve conversion efficiencies, reduce harvesting and transport costs; determine benefits of log sorting, tracking and managing wood and chip flows.
